What is BIG Hearts?
BIG Hearts began in 2010 and has to date supported 33 children through the loss of their loved one and provides ongoing support after a bereavement for as long as it is needed. BIG Hearts group gives children and young people between the ages of 7 and 16 years the opportunity to make new friends and share their experiences. The group is a joint venture between Care Plus Group/ Macmillan, North East Lincolnshire Council Young Carers Service and St. Andrews Hospice. Children attending the group have a family member with a life limiting illness. Additionally, the group offers a safe, therapeutic environment with trained staff to help the children talk through and explore any worries they have about their situation. The group meets on a Wednesday weekly (during school term time) between 4 and 6pm in the joint carers centre, Grimsby town. Each week the children have the opportunity for free time and take part in activities they have helped to plan. Activities include cooking, art and crafts, creative writing, film and games nights, sports, trips to the beach, woods and bowling, Mc Donald’s, The Magical Castle, and Jungle Zoo.
