Cromwell Road Resource Centre secures funding for an Environmental Awareness Project

The Cromwell Road Resource Centre – a day service for adults with learning and physical disabilities – has recently secured £1,474 for an Environmental Awareness Project, thanks to the Care Plus Group Innovation Fund.

The funding will be used to increase the awareness of the environment for services users and staff, using technology to provide a bridge between the outside and inside of the building. This will increase the awareness of flora and fauna around the centre as well as associated environmental processes through a weather station, composting and vermiculture.

The environmental works at the site will be extended to include a wildflower area and bug hotels to attract insects and a dedicated lavender area to support bee populations. The funding will also provide a pop-up gazebo to allow staff and service users to remain outside in light rain, as well as protecting people from the harmful effects of the sun.

The environmental activities associated with this project will ensure all those involved are outdoors and benefiting from the concept of a “green gym”, which aims to provide people with a way to enhance their fitness and physical and mental health, while taking action to improve the outdoor environment. It will enable people to get fit who would not normally attend a conventional gym or sports centre.

Susan Youle, Cromwell Road Resource Centre Team Leader, said: “The Potting Club at Cromwell Road Resource Centre would like to say a big thank you to the Care Plus Group Innovation Fund for funding much needed resources for the development of the Potting Club project to raise awareness of the environment.

“The Centre has undergone extensive environmental work over the last six months and this funding will help us to become even more eco-friendly, in-line with the Care Plus Group Strategic Environmental Objectives, by introducing a green gym and more biodiversity to the site.”
