Helen Lucas – Journey to success

Helen’s journey with Employability Services moves forward as she gains paid employment to finally start her career. Helen completed a Psychology degree this year and wanted to build on her existing knowledge and internship experience to lay a strong foundation for employment.

Since graduating college, Helen had applied for several job vacancies unfortunately, without success. She was very conscious that her confidence was lacking within interview situations and therefore made a self-referral to Employability Services to receive mentoring and support to build new opportunities. Helen was supported to engage on a voluntary placement as Receptionist at Navigo House, Grimsby where she was able to overcome anxieties about new environments and expectations.

During this time, Helen’s Employability Support Officer invested one on one time with her to review application forms and provide intense interview preparation, firstly for a shortlisting interview and secondly for a final interview. This extra support proved worthwhile as Helen was ultimately rewarded with the success of being offered a post as Apprentice Administration Assistant within Care Plus Community Therapy Team.

Helen’s placement mentor from Navigo spoke very highly of her stating “…you can notice a change in Helen’s confidence since starting with us, it has been a pleasure working alongside her”.

Helen also states that she is “…very grateful for the support from Employability Services” and believes it had a positive effect on her gaining this opportunity.
