Macmillan patient granted one last wish thanks to charity donation

The Macmillan Palliative Care Team affiliated with Care Plus Group has been awarded £312 from the Care Plus Group Charitable Trust to grant one final wish of a holiday to one of their patients.

The Macmillan team have been supporting a gentleman for a few years now who is currently an inpatient at St Andrew’s Hospice for symptom control. With his condition deteriorating the family had organised to go on holiday to a family members caravan in Skegness. However, he is unable to travel out of the local area due to medication restrictions and community nurses needing to renew the medication daily.

Therefore, the Palliative Social Worker at St Andrew’s Hospice, Tracy Parry, managed to get a discounted rate at the local holiday park, Thorpe Park, giving the patient his wish of a holiday alongside his wife, funded by the Care Plus Group Charitable Trust.

Rebecca Webster, Macmillan Assistant Social Welfare Officer, said on hearing about the successful application: “This is fantastic news! The patient will be overjoyed by the news, I’m sure. A big thank you to the Care Plus Group Charitable Trust from the Macmillan Social Welfare Team for making this possible and facilitating the patients wish to spend some quality time with his family on holiday whilst still being able to receive local community nursing care. This is a fantastic example of partnership working to fulfil a patient’s last wish whilst receiving end of life care.”

Neil Cartwright, Trustee of Care Plus Group Charitable Trust, said: “As a charity we exist to support individuals or groups with funds or equipment that will benefit the health and wellbeing of community members across Northern Lincolnshire. We were very happy to support the application from the Macmillan Palliative Care Team to grant their patient one last wish of a holiday alongside family. We would encourage anyone with a project that could make a difference to their local community to explore how the Charitable Trust could help them.”

Since its inception, the Care Plus Group Charitable Trust has provided more than £93,000 to over 90 community projects across North East Lincolnshire.
