Care Plus Group (CPG) is working with the Leicester Diabetes Centre as part of a nationwide initiative to increase the uptake of diabetes education. Part of this initiative is making MyDESMOND available to anyone over the age of 18 who is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
MyDESMOND is an interactive digital programme that was developed by the Leicester Diabetes Centre. It incorporates interactive learning, activity tracking and the ability to chat with other users and a direct connection with experts from the Leicester Diabetes Centre. This digital programme builds on the world-renowned DESMOND diabetes group education programme which CPG have been providing across the county since 2006.
Data from 2018 shows that over 10,000 adults registered at a GP practice in North East Lincolnshire have a diagnosis of diabetes, amounting to almost 10% of the North East Lincolnshire population aged 17 and over 90% with a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes.
CPG also provides DESMOND group education sessions for people with Type 2 education, and last year over 200 people benefited from attending. To support this and to increase access to information and support, CPG are now proud to announce the launch of MyDESMOND to anyone with Type 2 diabetes.
Evidence shows that people with Type 2 diabetes who attend diabetes education see improvements in quality of life; reduced depression and reduced hypoglycaemia rates, leading to better behavioural outcomes: suggesting that those who attend understand more about their diagnosis and therefore do more to improve their health and wellbeing.
Kerrie Pasquill-Johnson, Diabetes Nurse Specialist from CPG said:
“It is hoped that offering MyDESMOND to our portfolio of diabetes education for North East Lincs patients will go a long way to making a positive difference to the lives of those with Type 2 diabetes.
“By sharing clear and concise messages to encourage healthy living along with some innovative features such as the ‘buddies’ and education booster sessions, we hope that those with Type 2 diabetes will reap the benefits.
If you are interested in getting access to MyDESMOND, please speak to your GP or nurse for a referral, or email the team CPG.CommunityDiabetesService@nhs.net on for more information.
