Team achieve £16 million worth of support for NE Lincs residents since inception

A team that provides advice on benefits and financial support for people with cancer or a palliative care diagnosis have achieved over 16 million pounds in annualised payments of social security benefits, grants, industrial compensation and backdated arrears for their patients in just over 6 years.

The Macmillan Social Welfare Team, consisting of expert Macmillan Social Welfare Officers Kevin Moore and Paul Kelly, based at St. Andrews Hospice Grimsby, have just completed a review of their service and the internal audit shows the impressive figure they have achieved for their patients.  This was for a period from the start of the service in August 2010 to the end of 2016. The team are part of the Palliative Care Team and have achieved these results with limited resources.

The service supports people with a cancer and/or a palliative care diagnosis and who are registered to a North East Lincolnshire GP to maximise their incomings by applying for benefits which they are entitled to.  It also looks to access charitable funds and supports with benefit applications, reconsiderations and appeals.

Kevin Moore, Macmillan Social Welfare Officer, said:
“The service has gone from strength to strength from its beginning in 2010 and with Paul joining me in November 2014.  Referrals have increased yearly and 2016 saw over 500 patients and their families and carers accessing the service and resulting in over £5 million in payments being obtained.  People with a cancer diagnosis often find that their incomings drop while their outgoings increase and our aim is to help to maximise those incomings.  In this way patients can concentrate on their treatment rather than worry about financial difficulties.''
