Lung Cancer

The programme supports GPs in sending individuals for an X-ray earlier by a “push and pull” approach. Through this approach, we will not only have an earlier diagnosis but this will enable treatment earlier and improve outcomes.  Lung cancer can be contained and cured.

When people have one or more of these symptoms they should see their doctor for a possible chest X-ray to rule out lung cancer.

Signs and symptoms:

  • New persistent cough (more than 3 weeks)
  • Chest infection (2 to 3 weeks) not responding to treatment
  • Unexplained breathlessness
  • Unexplained tiredness
  • Chest pain and/or shoulder pain
  • Unexplained weight loss (particularly in a smoker)
  • Coughing up blood

Lung cancer is the most common cause of death in the UK.

A healthy lifestyle is the most important way to prevent cancer

  • Keep active
  • Never too late to stop smoking
  • Healthy diet
