The aim of specialist palliative care services is to improve the quality of life of patients and families who experience complex problems as they face all of the challenges of a life limiting illness. They do so by providing expertise in pain and symptom relief, spiritual, psychological and social support from diagnosis, through the stages of illness to care in the last year of life and into bereavement.
End of life care supports all those with advanced, progressive, incurable illness to live as well as possible until they die. It enables the supportive and palliative care needs of both patient and family to be identified and met throughout the last year of life and into bereavement. It includes management of pain and other symptoms and provision of psychological, social, spiritual and practical support including specialist palliative care as appropriate.
